This Week at the Capitol
March 21, 2017
The deadline for lawmakers to file bills was Friday, March 10. A total of 6,701 bills have been filed which is the 2nd highest number since 2009. The Texas Family Law Foundation is tracking approximately 400 bills. Our bill reviewers are working overtime to evaluate every bill, especially those that were dropped in the hopper the last few days before the filing deadline.
Yesterday marked the 70th day of the legislative session, which is officially the session’s half-way point.

The House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence will hear the State Bar and Board of Law Examiners Sunset bills this week. The Foundation is monitoring the State Bar Sunset legislation closely and will keep members informed about its status.
The House Committee on Juvenile Justice and Family Issues is scheduled to take up some of our bills. We will keep you apprised of their movement throughout the process.

We would like to thank our lobby volunteers Lisa Mathews of Conroe and Leigh de la Reza of Austin for devoting their time last week to the Foundation. Both volunteers met with legislative staff to discuss both positive and problematic aspects of bills and gave suggestions on how to fix certain provisions.
Leigh did an excellent job of testifying. It was her maiden voyage as a witness in a committee hearing. Please congratulate her on doing such a fine job of representing us.
Both volunteers are greatly appreciated and we welcome the help. Thank you, Lisa and Leigh.
