Message from Foundation President JoAl Cannon Sheridan
The Texas Family Law Foundation was created to give Texas family lawyers a strong, unified voice in Texas' legislative process. Since our fisst legislative session in 2007, the Foundation has proven more successful than we ever imagined! We've created lasting, effective relationships with legislators who now look to the Foundation as the key resource on issues affecting the legal concerns of Texas families. By doing so, we've positively influenced legislation to the benefit of Texas families and - more importantly - helped stop bad legislation from being enacted.
By preparing well in advance for each legislative session, we've been able to continue the Foundation's momentum year after year. Our lead lobbyist, Steve Bresnen, works alongside the Family Law Section's Legislative Committee on their legislative agenda, which is submitted to the State Bar for approval. This collaboration allows our team to be thoroughly knowledgeable about all issues and proposed legislation when the next session begins. Foundation volunteers and lobbyists work side-by-side during the interim period, providing critical guidance to legislative committees studying issues that may arise during the session. In all, it's a two-year process that begins immediately after each legislative session ends.
During each legislative session, Foundation volunteers and the lobby team (supported by the staff of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association) spend countless hours analyzing bills, testifying before House and Senate committees, and working with legislators and their staffs. Foundation volunteers - your colleagues and friends - spend time in Austin at their own expense, work from their offices & homes, and make themselves available during the session to ensure the success of our efforts. And it works!
Having seen the fruits of this labor over the years, I have no doubt that the Foundation will build on previous successes and strengthen our position as the go-to group for family law issues in our state.
We have significantly increased our membership rolls as more and more Texas family lawyers understand the value of an organization that works to improve their practices and the jurisprudence of our state. But the challenges to sound family law policy have never been more severe than they are today. To prevent truly bad ideas from becoming law, the Foundation needs all the support we can get. Your membership dues are critical to our success...we cannot do this alone.
This is our mission and I urge you to join the only group in Texas that represents the interests of family law bar, our clients and family law courts at the Capitol.
As we grow, so will our ability to have a positive effect on the lives of Texas families. Please join with us in this important effort.
