Brian Webb: Legislative Report

Wow! It’s hard to put into words the experience I had during the legislative session, but I’ll give it a try. The time I spent in Austin this session was eye-opening, educational, and exciting! Working with the Foundation Legislative Committee, volunteers and the lobby team, I was astonished at how much effort goes into navigating the legislative waters.

While in Austin, I participated in strategy meetings, met with legislators, analyzed bills and worked closely with our lobbyist, Steve Bresnen. It was fascinating! We spent time at the Capitol working with legislators from both sides of the aisle to craft bills that will help family law practitioners and our clients. The State Representatives and Senators were very responsive to us and interested in hearing our thoughts on family law issues and legislation.

In November, before the session even started, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association organized a Legislative Academy for the Family Law Foundation volunteers who would be participating in the session. What an education! We learned the in’s and out’s of working with legislators, the process for how a bill becomes a law, the committee process, how to testify, who the political players are, and more! It was invaluable, and the TTLA staff really created a road map for how we can work with legislators to ensure that new laws are fair and workable.

I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who is interested in having an impact on the laws affecting Texas families. It’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
